Oral history interview with Harold Ash, 1975 July 1.

In 1961 Harold Ash, who was on the staff of the Industrial Union Department of the AFL-CIO, was asked to evaluate the organizing potential of the American Federation of Teachers in the United States. The survey led to a recommendation that Philadelphia was one of the areas most ready for a collective bargaining campaign and Mr. Ash was assigned there on a full-time basis. In this interview he talks about the unrest among the teachers, the organization of the PFT campaign, the goals and objectives, and the support of Martin Luther King, Jr. He comments on the leadership of Local Three, including Celia Pincus, Margaret Root, John Ryan, and Frank Sullivan. He describes the personalities of the Philadelphia School Board at that time, as well as various school administrators. The interview includes details of the actions of some of the participants involved in the 1972-73 strike negotiations. He talks about the threatened general strike in the city of Philadelphia and how it was finally averted.
